Newspaper Article:  "MISS PEGAN IS MARRIED -- This afternoon at the office of the county clerk occurred the marriage of Isaac J. Pearson and Sarah Celeste Pegan and thereby is recalled one of the tragedies occuring in Grant county a few years ago.  Miss Pegan, who is the daughter of Harrison Pegan, was shot by her lover, George Keplinger, who is at present serving time in the penitentiary.  Miss Pegan was shot in the neck and her recovery was considered remarkable.  The groom is a tool dresser, aged thirty-eight.  It was his second marriage.  The bride is twenty.  The parties live in Van Buren township.

OBITUARY.  "GAS CITY--Opal Colene Eastes, 87, Fairfield Apartments, died at 2:45 p.m. Monday in Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie.  She was born in Jonesboro to the late Isaac J. and Sarah C. Pearson.  She was a lifetime resident of the Grant County area.  Mrs. Eastes was a former employee of SCM Paper, Marion, retiring in 1976 after 30 years of service.  She was a member of the VFW Post 6728 Ladies Auxiliary, Gas City.  Survivors include a daughter, Betty J. Reese, Gas City; a son, John F. (Liz), Lafayette, La.; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn, Jonesboro; a sister, Leona Hatfield, Greentown; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.  She also was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; a son, Joe; a grandson, Danny Cowgill; two brothers, Bill and Truman Pearson; and four half brothers and sisters.  Services will be at 3 p.m. Thusday in Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St.  Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.  Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to Cancer Services of Grant County, 1223 W. One of the first memories for Evans was when he was not quite six years of age.  It was when he lost his mother.  They had brought her body home and he looked at her in the coffin.  Her eyes were open and she was so still.  He didn't remember whether he cried, only that he was bewildered and it was a sad day.  His uncle Clarence wrote that "Evans was a Colby, quite earnest and a little temperamental, while Howard, two years younger, was more a Vandegrift, easy going and very practical."

Evans reported another memory.  It was the spring of 1908 and they were playing out in the yard of the Colby home when a carriage drawn by a team of horses rolled into the yard.  Elza had come to claim his children after the death of their mother.  The carriage lumbered along the road across the plains and through the hills on their way to Valentine where they were to board the train for Palmer.  What he remembered most about that trip, besides the scenery and the ride, was his dad singing.  Elza was a beautiful singer.  The songs were probably old western songs.  They boarded a train.  They had never seen one before and they were somewhat frightened.

Evans was an extremely angry young man, particularly during his junior and senior high school days.  The anger was because of his dad's behavior.  Stories were told to Evans about his father having affairs with a couple of women and Evans believed the stories.  He believed his father had disgraced the family.  He looked forward to the day when he could leave home.  Later, as Evans looked back on the events, he came to the position of not knowing whether the stories were true.  Perhaps, they were not.  From this background, Evans became a very determined, committed, serious individual.

His father taught him to work.  Evans was tough and strong all of his life.  Elza had passed on temper and stubborness and sometimes intolerance.  Evans did not want to be like his father but in some ways he was.  Indirectly, slowly, Evans learned how to forgive.  If we combine what his father gave to him, what Julia and Bertha gave to him, we have one who asked for no quarter but freely gave to others.  He was a survivor.

He taught school in Nebraska, Wyoming and Utah and he was a stern task master during his teaching days.  He had mining interests in Utah, Nevada and Idaho for more than thirty years.  In his later days, his zeal for Christ overwhelmed all else.

  Mr. Ryan was born in Huntington County.  He lived in Muncie for the past 40

years.  He was a Navy veteran of World War II.  He was manager at Firestone

tire store, Muncie, before retiring in 1978.  He was a member of the Loyal

Order of Moose Lodge 33, Riverside United Methodist Church, Ball State

Sympathy Club and the American Association of Retired Persons.  He was an

avid fisherman and gardener.

  Survivors include a daughter, Pat, Muncie; a brother, James (Betty),

Jonesboro; two sisters, Opal Leonard, Fort Wayne, and Mary Alice (Mrs Milton)

Scott, Jonesboro; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

  Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Parson Mortuary, Adams Chapel, 801

W. Adams St., Muncie, with the Rev. Marianne Chalstrom officiating.  Burial

will be in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Royerton.

  Military graveside services will be conducted by Veterans Organization of

Delaware County.

  Friends may call from 10 a.m. until services Saturday at the mortuary

chapel.
